The Quiet of Kintla Uploaded: 10/01/10 2:41 PM GMT

Image: The Quiet of Kintla

Okay Mimi, you talked me into it. On one day of our Glacier National Park visit we eschewed the more "touristy" parts of the park and traveled up the west side to Kintla Lake. This is the far west shore of the lake, a spot about 5 miles south of the Canadian border, and the photo amply illustrates just how clear this glacial water is. Underwater rocks can be easily seen for quite a distance from shore and the aquamarine blue you see here in the deeper water comes from minute particles of granite, crushed by glacial ice and suspended in the water, the particles reflecting nearly all color except blue. Storms can move through these mountains very quickly, as is happening in this shot; the "whiteout" in the middle horizon is heavy rain temporarily obscuring Long Knife Peak, and in the midst of that rain, a shaft of sunlight is hitting the shoreline trees, near the middle of the photo. The road to Kintla is an extremely rough, single-lane gravel road (we broke a shock on our Jeep when we hit a pothole), so it wasn't surprising to see only a portion of the three dozen primitive campsites occupied. No camper can make it in here so it's tents only. We stood on this beach, smelling a little woodsmoke from cooking fires, and hearing an occasional plink of a cooking pot behind us, the wind through the trees, loons calling, and light raindrops hitting the surface of the lake. Exceptionally peaceful and quiet, uncluttered by "civilization." The quiet, the simplicity of form (a glacial lake and mountains), the simple beauty of nature unsullied by man, makes this my entry in the “Simplicity” contest.

Thanks Nik for your comments on "Centerfield". Glad you appreciated the shot. The easiest way to explain the context of the photo are these map coordinates: 45 21' 50.4 N, 63 18' 58.76 W. That's a rough location of the hydrant within a few meters. A new water line was installed in the area a few years ago running parallel with the highway. The hydrant is most likely future-proofing. Have a lovely day. ~Wendell

This is so much a hobby for me i dont really expect people to like my work and my c scores are very average! Thankyou for the advice about the dry brush filer. I will try this with another of my images of a coastline that i want to upload but has lost definition due to a hazy sky! All the best - Rach :D

Finally made time to make some replies. Firstly, many thanks for your comments on Next stop Denmark and other images I have posted.
Secondly, I concur with your obsevations on photos posted in portrait format, but sometimes only this format will work with a given subject. I suppose I could take a positive view and call portrait views wallpaper for the IPad age.
Next, your queries about the photo. I was hoping someone would pick up on the fact that as the camera shot was to the east, this would be a sunrise. In fact, this was not the case. If you refer to my posting "Borderline" the sunset in it was shot within 20 minutes of Denmark (this also answers your question regarding what was to left of camera, although at cliff top it was rather more mundane, being rows of holiday homes!). The photo that is Denmark is of a glow in the clouds caused, I suspect, by ice or dust particles contained in the clouds reflecting sunlight.
The photo had very little post work, and reflects almost the view as seen. I hope this satisfies your curiosity.
All the best. Barry.

I made that for my kids. They was sitting beside me on the couch when they came up with the idea. So together we shot the pictures and I showed them how it is done. They were inspired by a similar shot of a bald man.

Hi Nik,
too feed your brain with information about that waterfall I fond this article:
"From a small iron bridge, near the St Laurents Church you can watch the spectacle of water cascades tumbling over rock, through the medieval half-timber and Baroque age houses. The steam of the Leukbach River originally flowed around the neighborhood today known as Niederleuken, which pooled in fish ponds where the early inhabitants could catch a meal and formed and moats of the Saarburg castle. In the 13th Century, to provide water for fighting fires which tended to ravage the wooden buildings of medieval town the stream was redirected through the town over the waterfall with the added benefit of powering the wheels of a flour mill. In 1657 the Hackenberger Mill was designated as the official mill of the Palatine Elector and today is the mill museum."

Thanks for your interest!

Thanks for the fave for "Now You See Me". We are so lucky living so close to a big river like The Mersey which gives wonderful views of Liverpool.

Nik - Thanks so much for the fave of 'Kitties'. These animals were on the prowl. They had been brought back from their area, with a staff member putting meat chunks around the caged area, and moving objects they play with. Apparently, the moved objects are a source of agitation, and the jaguars move them back to their preferred spots, and move about getting their food. With this, they were quite animated. At 2000 psi, I wouldn't want their jaws anywhere near me, though.

Thanks for your vote of encouragement with "Gondola Maker." You should have seen the original, pre-post processing. Nevertheless, I agree that it fits the contest topic and I appreciate you adding the photo to your faves, Nik.

Thanks for your recent comments Nik.

In answer to your recent question: The bridge support cables are hollow rolled metal and were found to be corroding internally several years ago. They now blast warm dry air through them to preserve them from rusting and the trolley cars you see are part of the inspection and maintenance programme. Hey I pleased to have got that of my chest.
